Senior Hurling:

South Liberties 2-19 Murroe Boher 2-17

South Liberties senior hurlers kicked off their competitive season at LIT last Sunday in the 1st round of the Pierse Motors, Tipperary sponsored East senior hurling championship. On a crisp cool day before a good crowd, South Liberties, playing with the advantage of a stiff breeze, were slow to settle and found early scores difficult to come by. However, mid-way through the half, David O Neill crashed home a great goal after good work by Shane Garry to put daylight between the sides. Just before halftime Murroe Boher found the net with a well worked goal to leave the half-time score 1:10 to 1:05 in Liberties favour.

Liberties started the 2nd half in great style as they faced the strong wind and with 20 minutes left on the clock had increased their lead to 2:12 to 1:08, the goal, a spectacular effort, from the stick of Shane Garry. However, Murroe Boher knuckled down and aided by that stiff breeze began to chip away at the Liberties lead. A great goal from Murroe’s Seanie Tobin with 15 minutes to go would mean that the game was destined for an exciting climax and the sides continued to swap points deep into injury time. Liberties, however, held out for a very satisfactory opening win of the season for Cronan Garry’s men. This was a good all round team effort and if some unnecessary indiscipline can be ironed out it bodes well for the year ahead. Paul Butler made some excellent saves between the posts behind an uncompromising full back line. Our halfback line hurled well, ably assisted by a hard-working midfield pairing. Shane O Neill led the attack in his customary swashbuckling style and his colleagues in a hard-working forward line responded with all six forwards getting on the scoresheet.
